Current Information:SDGW-HILSON Enlisted-Stratford Wulverghem-Lindenhoek Road Military Cemetery, Belgium
On 29th December, 1914, the 1st East Surrey battalion of 14 Brigade, 5th Division moved into the front line north-east of Wulverghem in Belgium where no-man’s-land ranged from 30 to 120 yards in width with some of the advanced listening posts being only 10 yards away from those of the enemy. The Battalion Diary entry for 2nd January recorded that the ‘Germans have practically refrained from firing on our men since arrival in the present trenches and that on this day there was no shelling. Despite this assertion 2 men, one of whom was Frederick Hillson were killed in action on this day. |
